Worksheet for Challenging Unhelpful Automatic Thoughts

This worksheet came from a conversation between my client and me. I often find metaphors helpful when exploring abstract or emotionally intense concepts in therapy. Together, we landed on the metaphor of “WiFi” to describe negative or unhelpful automatic thoughts, thoughts that can show up quickly, feel intense, and seem to connect without conscious choice.

Using this worksheet in session helped make the work feel more accessible. The WiFi bars gave us a way to talk about the intensity of different negative thoughts or “voices”, from a weak signal to full bars. It also helped us explore what tends to activate the signal, such as certain people, situations, times of day, body sensations or specific triggers.

Rather than focusing solely on the content of the thoughts, this worksheet encouraged curiosity about the process: When does the signal become stronger? What helps weaken it? And how does the client want to respond when the signal appears?

I found that the metaphor helped externalise the experience, making it easier to discuss difficult thoughts while maintaining enough distance for reflection and exploration.

This worksheet is a therapeutic reflection tool designed to support exploration of automatic thoughts. It is not a diagnostic tool or a substitute for therapy, clinical advice or personalised mental health support.
